LONDON (CNI)--French speciality chemicals producer Rhodia announced Wednesday that it is to mothball one of its two phenol production lines in Roussillon, France in what it describes as a "long-term, temporary stoppage".
Capacity at the site will be cut by 60 000 tonne/year to 100 000 tonne/year and two thirds of the remaining output will be allocated for Rhodia's internal requirements. About 30 employees will be affected by the closure but a Rhodia spokesman confirmed that all of these will be redeployed at the Roussillon site.
Rhodia said it is closing the plant - its oldest and least efficient phenol production unit - as part of an exercise to reduce its exposure to phenol business cycles.
The company said it is to invest Euro6m in reengineering its phenol production facilities to reduce production costs at the remaining 100 000 tonne/year line at Roussillon and its 130 000 tonne/year facility at Paulinia, Brazil.
