LONDON (CNI)--German specialty chemicals manufacturer Degussa-Huls said Wednesday it is to buy hydrogen peroxide producer Alliance Peroxide, the 50:50 joint venture between South African groups AECI and Lllovo Sugar.

Alliance Peroxide produces 10 000 tonne/year of hydrogen peroxide at its plant in Umbogintwini, near Durban, South Africa and employs about 50 people. The plant is the only hydrogen peroxide production unit on the African continent, said Degussa-Huls.

The acquisition is subject to government approvals and would become effective retroactively from 1 January 2000. No financial details were disclosed.

Alliance Peroxide sells hydrogen peroxide under the Hyprox brand in South Africa and exports to all major markets in Africa. AECI and Lllovo Sugar have operated the joint venture since the commissioning of the plant in 1989.

Degussa-Huls said it views active oxygen-based chemicals as a core business with substantial growth potential.
