Peru to Auction Lusa Pharmaceutical

The Peruvian government is preparing to auction off the assets of pharmaceutical manufacturer Laboratorios Unidos SA (Lusa) of Lima, according to Carlos Herrera, the Minister Counselor at the Peruvian embassy in Washington. The facility manufactures about half of the human medicines made in Peru, according to a source.

Lusa produces antibiotics, anesthetics, creams, salts, syrups, vaccines and a variety of commercial products. It has a capacity of several million units per year. The government's foreign investment agency, the Comision de la Promocion de la Inversion, wants to sell the plant to a single buyer or divide its assets into two lots, Mr. Herrera says.

Among companies that have expressed interest in the facility are Schering Peruana, Hersil, Gloria, Cipa, Inversiones Toronto, Unimed del Peru, Quimica Suiza, Profarma, AmexPharma, Maqui-market, Refasa, Instituto Quimio-terapico, Disfloza, Farminter, Cerper and Exportadora El Sol.
