Shell Cologne refinery fire cuts petchem feedstocks output

LONDON (CNI)--Production of petrochemical feedstocks from Deutsche Shell's oil refinery at Cologne-Godorf have been cut by about half following a major fire which broke out Thursday night in one of the plant's two crude oil distillation units.
Shell Chemicals told CNI on Friday that the affected distillation unit had been shutdown, reducing the plant's output by about half.
The refinery, Germany's fourth largest, produces about 10m tonne/year of oil products of which about 20% are petrochemical feedstocks. No further details of the petrochemical feedstocks produced was immediately available.
Shell said the fire was still burning on Friday morning but there was no immediate danger of it spreading to other parts of the refinery.
No-one was reported to have been injured in the blaze, the cause of which was not known. However, emergency services warned nearby residents to close windows and remain indoors due to the large amounts of smoke being generated by the fire.
