SAN ANTONIO, Texas (CNI)--BP Amoco expects its paraxylene (PX) plant in Geel, Belgium to begin production in the next few weeks and to come fully onstream later in the second quarter, the company told CNI here at the International Petrochemical Conference (IPC).

Commissioning of the 420 000 tonne/year unit has already started, said Mark Noetzel, BP Amoco group vice president for feedstocks.

All the PX will be consumed by BP Amoco’s purified terephthalic acid (PTA) plants at the site, he said.

The IPC is sponsored by the National Petrochemical & Refiners Association (NPRA) and ends Tuesday.
