LONDON (CNI)--Expectations rose Friday that German chemicals group BASF and Italy's Sisas could unveil a deal over Belgian anhydride production by late next week (10-12 May).
Sources close to BASF have indicated that the German firm might buy into Sisas' anhydride production, but it was unclear whether this could be both phthalic and maleic anhydride (PA, MA), or what form a deal might take.
BASF declined to comment on the issue. Sisas was unavailable for comment.
Sias has PA production assets in Feluy (110 000 tonne/year of PA, 220 000 tonne/year of MA, 100 000 tonne/year of MA derivatives and 100 000 tonne/year of plasticisers) and Ostend (100 000 tonne/year of PA and 80 000 tonne/year of plasticisers).
CNI's sister publication, European Chemical News (ECN) reported in February that Sisas was in talks with a major northwest European producer to sell its on-site MA and plasticiser units at Feluy and hoped for a deal before summer. ECN also stated that a BASF source confirmed the company was negotiating to buy Sisas' MA and plasticiser interests at the site.
