Strategy

Cambrex has formed a strategic business unit within the Pharmaceutical Business Group, to focus on the innovator pharmaceutical market. The new business unit will be comprised of the Nordic Synthesis and Salsbury Chemicals subsidiaries, as well as the Pharmaceutical Sales and Business Development team.

Better homes

Bayer has announced a boost to its home and garden business with the acquisition of marketing and trademark rights for UK firm Phostrogen's fertiliser and plant protection products. Bayer undertook the purchase - for an undisclosed sum - through its UK subsidiary, Home & Garden, which it bought last year from Japan's Sumitomo.

Approval

The European Commission (EC) has approved the acquisition of UK company F2 Chemicals by Japan's Asahi Glass, Mitsubishi and Mitsubishi's Italian subsidiary, Miteni. F2, a subsidiary of British Nuclear Fuels (BNFL), is mainly active in perfluorocarbons. Miteni specialises in fine chemicals, especially fluorinated intermediates.

Ribozyme

Ribozyme Pharmaceuticals of the US and Avecia LifeScience Molecules (LSM) have announced the establishment of a ribozyme manufacturing agreement.

Joint venture

Albemarle and Jinhai Chemical and Industry Company has set up a joint venture for the manufacture, sale and export of speciality polymer stabilisers, flame retardants and selected fine chemicals.
