LONDON (CNI)--German chemicals and life sciences giant BASF said Thursday it is to more than triple production of the plastic precursor PolyTHF (polytetrahydrofuran) at Ludwigshafen, Germany. Capacity will be increased to 56 000 tonne/year from 16 000 tonne/year.
BASF said this will create the world's largest PolyTHF plant when the expansion is completed in early 2002. The company is expanding the plant in response to the rapid growth in demand for PolyTHF in Europe. Investment details were not disclosed.
BASF also produces PolyTHF at Geismar in the US, Yokkaichi in Japan and Ulsan, South Korea. The Ulsan facility was brought onstream a few days ago with an expanded capacity of 30 000 tonne/year, the company revealed.
From the beginning of 2002, BASF's total PolyTHF capacity will reach 124 000 tonne/year.
PolyTHF is the most important raw material used in the manufacture of elastomer fibres, and is also a precursor for thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers (TPUs).
