LONDON (CNI)--Germany's BASF said Monday it is to raise butyl acrylate capacity at Ludwigshafen by 100 000 tonne/year by the beginning of 2003.

The group declined to reveal current production figures for butyl acrylate, but said output for the precursor acrylic acid at Ludwigshafen is estimated at 270 000 tonne this year.

BASF said the expansion will be extremely cost-effective because it will use the existing infrastructure.

European demand for butyl acrylate, which currently can only be met with the help of imports, is growing at about 4%, the company said. Butyl acrylate is mainly used in the production of polymer dispersions for the paint, adhesive, paper and construction industries.
