AVENTIS PHARMA LTD. and Chugai Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd., both based in Tokyo, have reached an agreement in principle to terminate their contract next April for the co-development and co-distribution of the taxoid-class anti-cancer drug generically known as docetaxel hydrate. The companies will continue to maintain a cooperative relationship in both independent and mutual activities in Japan and Europe.

In other Aventis news, Aventis CropScience Japan and Zen-Noh, the National Federation of Agricultural Cooperative Associations in Japan, have received authorization to register a new herbicide, Oxaziclomefone, which the companies co-developed. The product is intended for herbicide mixtures in paddy rice and turf.

TOSOH CORPORATION has begun building a quartz processing plant in southern Taiwan to strengthen its quartz operations in Asia. The plant is part of Tosoh Quartz Taiwan Co. Ltd., which was established in May 1999 to manufacture and market quartz products for the semiconductor industry. Construction began on September 8 and is scheduled to be completed next May. Total capital investment for the plant is roughly ¦1.5 billion ($14 million). The decision to build the plant was made due to increased demand for fabricated quartz products in Taiwan.
