Asahi plans to up capacity of acrylonitrile

Japan's Asahi Chemical Industry is considering plans to build new acrylonitrile capacity in Saudi Arabia or Thailand, according to local reports.

In addition, the company is looking at expanding production in South Korea where it already operates a 130 000 tonne/year plant at Ulsan.

An investment of ´40bn ($373m) could be made to increase production by a total of nearly 450 000 tonne/year by 2005. A new 200 000 tonne/year facility may be built at Ulsan to replace an older 60 000 tonne/ year line.

A 200 000-250 000 tonne/year unit is under scrutiny for either Thailand, where it would supply local ABS producers, or Saudi Arabia which has the advantage of low-priced propylene feedstock.
