LONDON (CNI)--BASF's new Euro200m ($176m) dispersions centre at its Ludwigshafen, Germany complex was formally opened on Tuesday.

The German chemicals and pharmaceuticals giant said today that the 400 000 tonne/year capacity facility will boost production capacity for all BASF's polymer dispersions at Ludwigshafen to 800 000 tonne/year.

Kurt Beck, Prime Minister of Rhineland-Palatine, is to perform the opening ceremony with Stefan Marcinowski, BASF Aktiengesellschaft board member and spokesman of the company's research division.

The new centre is described by Andreas Kreimeyer, head of BASF's dispersions operating division, as representing a technological milestone for acrylate dispersions.

"In future we will produce acrylate dispersions in our new facility," he said. "The key raw materials are acrylic acid and its esters. The dispersions facility is thus an integral part of the value added chain based on acrylic acid."

Last year, the dispersions operating division contributed Euro2.3bn to the Euro6.4bn sales of BASF's colorants and finishing products business, said BASF. Polymers accounted for more than a third of this share, paper chemicals about a third, monomers around a quarter and superabsorbers about 10%.
