LONDON (CNI)--Two new polymer plants at the BP Chemicals complex in Grangemouth, Scotland are nearing completion, CNI learned on Thursday.
The AtoFina/BP joint venture Appryl is in the final stages of commissioning its new 250 000 tonne/year polypropylene (PP) plant and BP Chemicals is expected to begin producing commercial quantities of polyethylene (PE) from its new linear low density polyethylene (lldPE) plant next month.
A spokesman for BP at Grangemouth said the PP plant has been producing material and is currently undergoing final commissioning work.
He said the PE plant has had gases phases in the reactor as part of the commissioning process and should be in "beneficial operation" in November.
Both projects are behind schedule. The PP plant was originally scheduled to come onstream in the first quarter this year, while the lldPE unit was due to be completed in the second quarter.
An associated warehouse and logistics complex is now fully operational.
