Dow Chemical has received approval from China's authorities to build a 40 000 tonne/year converted epoxy resins production unit. The plant will be located at Zhangjiagang, Jiangsu Province, China, and is expected to become operational in the first half of 2003.
Dow has said that it is considering plans to expand the unit by adding 40 000 tonne/year of liquid epoxy resin capacity in 2004. The site of the new plant is also the location of two other facilities currently under construction. A 120 000 tonne/year polystyrene plant, owned by SAL Petrochemical (Zhangjiagang) Company, a joint venture between Dow and Asahi Chemical, and Dow's 22 000 tonne/year styrene butadiene latex unit, both of which are due to start up in 2000, (ECN 10 April 2000).
Dow said that the coordination of the three plants on one site would 'leverage synergies in capital, infrastructure and utilities'.
Michael Lung, president of Dow Greater China, said: 'The site is central to the Chinese market and its location on the Yangtze River, near Shanghai, makes it an excellent site to service both the domestic and regional markets'.
Dow added that it intends to make the Zhangjiagang site one of its hubs for its growing operations in Asia.
