JAKARTA (CNI)--Indonesia's government will tighten control over imports of acetic anhydride as it fears that the product is misused in the illegal making of narcotics, CNI was informed Wednesday.

Gatot Ibnusantosa, Director General for Chemicals with the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MIT) here said that while the government will not restrict imports of acetic anhydride, which has its main use as a raw material for many industries, Jakarta would step up control over the final use of imports of the product.

Gatot was talking to reporters here earlier Wednesday.

Meanwhile a senior source at MIT confirmed that the Ministry is considering putting the product on its list of dangerous materials and chemicals.

The government has recently come under increasing public pressure to crack down on narcotics abuse.
