Yanpet, the joint venture between Sabic and Exxon-Mobil, is keen to develop new ethylene capacity in Saudi Arabia. However, any decision to proceed would depend on Sabic, according to Yanpet president Ali Al-Kuraini. While there are no firm plans, it is envisaged that the cracker could have a capacity of up to 1m tonne/year and come onstream some three years after a decision to proceed. Sabic has also confirmed that it will build an ethane-based cracker at Yanbu. The unit will have a capacity of at least 800 000 tonne/year and is likely to come onstream around 2004, depending on receipt of feedstock commitments. Down-stream units are likely to include ethylene glycol, linear alpha-olefins and polyethylene (ECN 25 September 2000).
