SINGAPORE (CNI)--Japanese specialties producer Tayca Corp has several project expansions nearing completion that are aimed mainly at boosting its potential in higher value chemicals, CNI learned on Thursday.

A spokesman there said the mid-size, Osaka-based company is investing:

  • Yen1bn ($9.1m/Euro10.2m) to double output of titanium dioxide (TiO2) at its Okayama plant to 1200 tonne/annum. The expansion is scheduled for startup in January 2001.
  • Yen600.0m to increase production of its zinc oxide (that blocks long ultraviolet rays which cause wrinkles) to 200 tonne/year from 100 tonne/year. Completion would be within Q1.
  • Yen600.0m to triple annual production at its Osaka plant to 6400 tonne/year of chemical agents that dissolve detergents in water. Completion is scheduled for April 2001.

Demand for its mainline TiO2 has been slow, and Tayca expects the expansion to help improve its manufacturing economics and lift its earnings base.
