SC'00: China sees additional PS capacity of 1m tonne by '05

SINGAPORE (CNI)--China will see new polystyrene (PS) capacity of over 1m tonne by 2005, equivalent to over 50% of additional PS capacity in East Asia by then, according to Andrew Swanson, director with consultants ChemSystems, Wednesday.
The increased capacity will be needed to absorb higher PS demand in the country, forecast at 14.5%/year, according to Swanson.
Current PS demand in China stands at over 1.1m tonne/year, Swanson said.
Total demand for PS in East Asia is at around 3.5m tonne/year and will grow by 5.8%, he added.
Swanson disclosed this information in a paper he gave at the 4th World Styrene Conference (SC'00) here, an event organised by Asian Chemical News and ICIS-LOR, sister organisations of CNI.
