SC'00: S'pore sees sharp rise in benzene demand through '05

SINGAPORE (CNI)--Consumption of benzene in Singapore's cluster of petrochemical and chemical companies will show the highest growth rates in Asia with total consumption forecast to reach 1m tonne/year by 2005, up from currently around 300 000 tonne/year, CNI learned Thursday.

This information was disclosed by Danley Wolfe, director with ChemSystems, who was presenting a paper on styrene feedstocks at the 4^th World Styrene Conference (SC'00) here.

Benzene consumption in China by 2005 will reach close to 2.5m tonne/year, up from currently around 1.5m tonne/year, while South Korean consumption is forecast to reach 2.2m tonne/year (currently: 2.0m tonne/year).

The forecasts for other key benzene consumers in the region are: Taiwan 1.4m tonne/year (currently below 1.0m tonne/year), Thailand 500 000 tonne/year (currently around 300 000 tonne/year) and India just under 1.0m tonne, up from currently around 400 000 tonne/year.

The two-day conference, an event organised by CNI sister organisations Asian Chemical News and ICIS-LOR, will end Thursday afternoon.
