SINGAPORE (CNI)--Additional ethylene (C2) production capacity in Asia, excluding Japan, could reach over 11m tonne/year within the next four to five years if all projects and expansions are realised, according to consultancy Chem Systems.
Danley Wolfe, director with Chem Systems, said China alone would see an additional ethylene capacity of more than 5m tonne/year by 2005 if planned new joint-venture projects with foreign partner and expansions of existing plants go ahead. He was speaking here at the 4th World Styrene Conference (SC'00).*
Wolfe said that joint-venture projects in China, in particular, appeared to be going ahead and state petrochemicals giant China Petroleum & Chemical Corp (Sinopec) continues to emphasise modernisation and expansion of selected complexes.
Outside China and Japan, he forecast that east and southeast Asia would get additional new capacities of 6m tonne/year by 2005, should its planned new projects and expansions go ahead.
Nevertheless, despite the planned boost in C2 capacities in the region, Wolfe said Asia would remain the largest ethylene importing region and the Middle East the biggest exporter.
