LONDON (CNI)--Anglo-Norwegian engineering and construction group Kvaerner said Friday it has won contracts to build an acetone cyanohydrin production unit in Seal Sands, Teesside in northeast England for Ineos and an associated hydrocyanic acid storage facility for BASF.
The BASF storage and distribution facility will supply hydrocyanic acid to the new Ineos production plant under a separate agreement between the two producers, Kvaerner said. BASF will operate the production plant, which will supply acetone cyanohydrin to Ineos' acrylics facility at nearby Cassel Works in Billingham.
Total investment in the two projects is about £13m ($19m/Euro20m), according to Kvaerner. The company did not reveal the exact value of the two engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contracts. However, Richard Brady, business manager for Kvaerner Process, told CNI that it was in line with industry norms of about 20% of the total investment.
He said the projects are expected to be finished in January 2002, with commissioning expected in Q1-2002. He was unable to disclose the production capacity of the plant or size of the storage facility, citing confidentiality reasons.
Kvaerner said the project represents a continuing commitment to the region by BASF and Ineos.
