LONDON (CNI)--German pharmaceuticals, specialty chemicals and laboratory services group Merck KGaA said Monday it will relocate the global headquarters of its electronic chemicals division to Japan.

Merck KGaA announced that the relocation from Darmstadt, Germany to Tokyo would be effective from 1 April. The new headquarters for electronic chemicals is to be headed by Walter Bardorff, a Merck veteran of 23 years and currently regional manager for Asia.

The company said the strength of Asian electronic chemicals markets led it to transfer the electronic chemicals headquarters to Tokyo. In Asia, Merck KGaA is partner with Japanese firm Kanto Kagaku in the electronic chemicals markets, and Bardorff was a special advisor to the partnership for five years in the mid-1980s.

Bardorff will take over electronic chemicals from Jurgen Eichler, who Merck KGaA said plans to leave the company. Merck KGaA added that Eichler is to be a consultant to its specialty chemicals division.

Bernhard Scheuble, chief executive of Merck KGaA, said: 'This new organisation demonstrates the commitment of the general management to the future of electronic chemicals."
