SINGAPORE (CNI)--Mitsubishi Rayon Corporation (MRC) is considering an investment of Yen30bn ($257m/Euro279m) to expand acrylic capacity in China and the US, CNI learned Wednesday.

The Tokyo, Japan-based company said it is studying plans for a new unit to be operational by the beginning of 2004 in the US, with capacities of 150 000 tonne/year of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and 15 000 tonne/year of ester.

MRC also has plans to expand MMA capacity in China by 40% to 70 000 tonne/year.

But the company did not disclose further details on specific locations that may be under consideration. Mitsubishi Rayon has operations at several sites in the US including a plant in Pasadena, Texas, near Houston where Dianal America produces coating resins, according to company information.
