HOUSTON (CNI)--Fluor Daniel has been awarded a contract to manage the design, procurement and construction of a $2.6bn integrated petrochemical project in Nanjing, China, the company said Tuesday.
Fluor Daniel, the engineering and construction unit of Aliso Viejo, California-based Fluor, declined to provide the exact value of the contract but said "services such as those it has been contracted to perform generally range between 4-6% of the total contract value."
The company said the project will include a 600 000 tonne/year steam cracker and eight downstream plants. Chemicals to be produced include aromatics, low density polyethylene (ldPE), ethylene glycol, acrylic acid, acrylic esters, oxo-alcohols, formic acid, propionic acid and methylamines.
Fluor will manage the project on behalf of BASF-YPC, a joint venture between BASF and China Petroleum & Chemical (SINOPEC).
Said Philip Carroll, chairman and chief executive of Fluor: "Our presence in China for the past 2½ decades provides our clients like BASF and SINOPEC with a high level of confidence in our ability to perform within the boundaries of this economically and politically influential super power."
Early site preparation work has started and engineering is expected to begin in the first quarter this year. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2002. The integrated site is expected to be fully functional by 2005.
Under terms of the contract, Fluor will provide a variety of management services over the life of the project. Early phases of the project will be executed at several global locations, with the core management team initially located at Fluor's office in Haarlem, the Netherlands.
