Japan's Himelt to begin recycling foamed polystyrene

SINGAPORE (CNI)--Japan’s environmental specialist Himelt is poised this week to bring onstream its 130 kilogramme/hour foamed polystyrene (PS) recycling plant in Kanagawa prefecture, a company source told CNI on Tuesday.
Himelt is targeting recycled PS output at municipal governments, manufacturers and general contractors, the source said. The company expects annual sales of Yen500m ($3.9m/Euro4.4m).
Customers will be sold a liquid solvent that reduces foamed PS to a gel-like state. They will be paid a nominal fee to collect the gel. The gel will subsequently be processed at a special plant to separate the PS from the solvent, the Himelt source added.
The PS thus obtained can be sold to industrial users, and the solvent can be purified to recover around 90% of the original volume for reuse, according to the source.
Himelt has developed the equipment and solvent used for separating the gel components in collaboration with MHI Sagami, an affiliate of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries MHI), the source said.
