LONDON (CNI)--EniChem is to cut its expandable polystyrene (EPS) production by about 30% during May and June in response to deteriorating profit margins, a source directly involved in the Italian company's polystyrene (PS) business told CNI Friday.

The company is making the cuts by bringing forward any maintenance work at its three EPS plants - in Belgium (Feluy), Italy (Mantova) and Hungary (Szazhalombatta) - scheduled for 2001 to May and June, he said. As a result, overall output will be about 30% lower than April levels. EniChem has the capacity to produce about 100 000 tonne/year of EPS, split between the three plants, he added.

Normal production is likely to resume in July, the source said.

EniChem is also cutting its production of compact polystyrene (PS) by 25% over May and June, as revealed by CNI 3 May. The cutbacks at the Feluy, Mantova and Szazhalombatta plants will also be implemented by anticipating any maintenance work during the year, a separate EniChem source said today.
