LONDON (CNI)--Belgian chemicals and pharmaceuticals group Solvay said Tuesday it is to invest Euro12m ($10m) in the construction of an 80 000 tonne/year sodium bicarbonate plant at its soda ash facility in Torrelavega, Spain.

The plant, which is due onstream in October 2002, will take the site's sodium bicarbonate capacity to 120 000 tonne/year and Solvay's global capacity to 450 000 tonne/year.

Solvay said sales of sodium bicarbonate, which it markets as Bicar, have been boosted by new applications such as the Neutrec flue gas treatment process. Global demand for sodium bicarbonate has been growing at about 5-6% for the last five years, said a company spokesman.

The new Bicar line will serve the Spanish market and contribute to the development of export sales, said Solvay. Exports can be combined with the high volume exports of soda ash, it added.
