BASF Ups Sunscreen Capacity

BASF has more than tripled production capacity for its sunscreen ingredient Uvinul MC 80 (ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate) with the successful commissioning of a new plant in Ludwigshafen, Germany. The new plant was brought on line, as planned, in the second quarter. It increases production capacity to 4,500 metric tons per year.The product, which is part of BASF's UVB and UVA absorbers, is used in both sunscreen and daily skin care products. BASF produces both organic and inorganic sunscreen ingredients. In 1999, it acquired sunSmart's worldwide business in UV absorbers based on zinc oxide to build a position in inorganic sunscreen ingredients. With the deal BASF acquired the trademarks Z-Cote and Z-Cote HP I.Concerns over sun exposure are driving demand for sunscreen ingredients.
