Dunastyr PS production forges on

Dunastyr, the Hungarian polystyrene producer now 100% owned by Italy's EniChem, saw turnover in 2000 reach Forint25bn ($84m), with product supplying mainly the eastern and middle European markets. Since its formation as a joint venture in 1988, it has achieved a leading position in most of the important markets of the region.

The head office of the company is located in Budapest, while the production facilities, based on licences and know-how from EniChem, are located at Százhalombatta. The company manufactures two types of polystyrene: high impact polystyrene and expandable polystyrene, sold as Edistir and Extir, respectively. Dunastyr today employs some 140 people.

Manufacturing activity started in June 1991 and since then capacity increases have taken production of Extir and Edistir to 25 000 tonne/year and over 70 000 tonne/year, respectively. Last year, EniChem decided again to increase production capacity of Extir, up to 40 000 tonne/year, by constructing an additional polymerisation reactor, debottlenecking the subsequent drying, screening and finishing processes and increasing storage capacity.

The Italian Snamprogetti Sud, with the cooperation of Hungary's Olajterv, is the general contractor of the lumpsum turnkey project, which will be completed in October 2001. The capacity expansion is being made with full respect to the environmental requirement of the local municipal government, which is not permitting any increase of volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions in the area.
