ICI denies drugs war story

ICI has denied it was behind the decision to withhold Cosmo-Flux, containing its Atplus product, from the US-sponsored project to destroy coca crop in Colombia. Cosmo-Flux was added to glyphosate herbicide to reduce drift during spraying.

A recent report in a UK newspaper suggested ICI did not want its name dragged into such a programme, particularly as there have been reports of children in Colombia inhaling chemicals and falling ill.

ICI sells Atplus through its subsidiary Uniqema to an Ecuadorian tropical flowers and foliages producer CosmoAgro.

An ICI spokeswoman said: 'It was CosmoAgro which committed to Uniqema not to sell Cosmo-Flux for spraying coca plants. But it will continue to use it in formulations for improving crop yields for bananas, coffee, rice and flowers.'
