LONDON (CNI)--BASF is seeking a DM0.15/kilogramme rise in polystyrene (PS) prices in Europe from next month, Karl Foester of the Germany group's PS business confirmed to CNI on Thursday.

He said operating rates have been reduced by 15% this month due to seasonally low demand but are expected to reach normal levels in September.

Other PS producers are also seeking price increases in a bid to restore battered profit margins.

A source close to Nova Chemicals confirmed the Canadian company planned to increase prices in Europe by DM0.15/kilogramme from 1 September. Earlier this month Nova told customers it is raising prices for expandable polystyrene (EPS) in Europe by DM0.30/kg from the same date. A similar EPS rise is planned by BP.
