Rensselaer, N.Y.-based Organichem Corp. has acquired the marketing and manufacturing rights to bulk meperidine hydrochloride from Sanofi-Synthelabo. A schedule II controlled substance and potent synthetic analgesic, meperidine has been continuously manufactured at the Rensselaer site since its discovery there in 1939."Production of controlled substances is a core strength at Organichem," says John Fallone, president. "I am pleased to be able to work directly with our customers on a product with which we have had such a long and proud history. This is an important step in expanding our presence in the controlled substances area."
Founded in 1999 through a management buyout from Nycomed Amersham, Organichem is approved to manufacture controlled substances from schedules II through IV, including pentobarbital and amphetamines.
During the divestiture of Sterling Winthrop by Eastman Kodak Corp. in 1995, Sanofi-Synthelabo, which purchased Sterling's ethical pharmaceutical business, sold the Rensselaer facility to Nycomed Amersham but retained the rights to meperidine technology.
