LONDON (CNI)--Workers at state-owned phosphates producer Jordan Phosphate Mines Co (JPMC) have cancelled plans to strike early this month, a company official told CNI on Thursday.

He said the workers have agreed to postpone until next year their demands for a Jordanian Dinar5 ($7.1/Euro7.8) a month salary increase, amongst other requests for early retirement and certain incentive schemes.

The company official added that the wage increase is dependent on JMPC's financial performance.

Trade union officials representing workers at JMPC could not be immediately reached for comment.

In June, the Jordanian government announced its intention to privatise the flagging phosphates producer. JPMC made a substantial loss last year and has accumulated debts of about Dinar350m. The company has blamed its performance on rising extraction costs, increased competition in the world market, declining phosphate prices and a production backlog.
