LONDON (CNI)--BP has started commissioning its new 250 000 tonne/year vinyl acetate monomer (VAM) plant in Hull, northeast England and commercial production is scheduled to begin in October, a spokesman confirmed on Monday.
The UK-headquartered energy group had originally planned to begin producing on-spec product in August but final commissioning has taken longer than expected. The spokesman did not reveal the cause of the delay.
As a result of the delay, BP has had to defer by several months the closure of its 125 000 tonne/year VAM plant at Baglan Bay, South Wales. BP will keep the plant at Baglan Bay running until the end of the year because it needs to be certain that production at Hull is running smoothly, said the spokesman. The group had previously planned to close the Baglan Bay plant during the third quarter.
