SINGAPORE (CNI)--BASF Japan will take over the operations of wholly-owned subsidiary BASF Polyurethane Elastomers from 1 January 2002 in a move the company says is consistent with its aim of remaining one of the leading global suppliers to the polyurethane industry.

A spokeswoman for BASF Japan said BASF Polyurethane Elastomers' 6000 tonne/year thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) plant at Yokkaichi, Mie Prefecture, Japan, willcontinue to be run by the Japanese parent company, which has plans to increase TPU's domestic market share. The spokeswoman did not disclose what these plans involve.

German giant BASF has defined polyurethane as one of its core businesses worldwide and has undertaken to expand its activities in the sector through additional investment.

TPU is processed by extrusion or injection to meet a wide range of applications - from cables, hoses and tubes to sports shoe soles and various parts for the automotive and construction industries.

BASF Polyurethane Elastomers became 100% owned by BASF in July 2000 after a 50:50 joint venture contract with Takeda Chemical Industries was dissolved.
