LONDON (CNI)--Japan's Nippon Gohsei and UK-headquartered energy group BP confirmed on Tuesday that they have signed final agreements for the construction of a 15 000 tonne/year ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH) plant in northeast England.

The $95m (Euro105m) plant will be built by Nippon Gohsei at BP's chemicals site at Saltend, near Hull.

Nippon Gohsei expects to begin construction next month, having already received planning permission from the local authorities. To be owned and operated by Nippon Gohsei, the plant is expected onstream in late 2003. It will employ some 70 permanent staff.

The plant's primary feedstocks - vinyl acetate monomer (VAM) and ethylene - will be supplied by BP. VAM will come from the new 250 000 tonnes a year unit at Saltend which BP has recently completed commissioning. Ethylene will be supplied by the recently completed Teesside to Saltend ethylene pipeline.

Gareth James, BP Saltend works general manager, said the new plant was the first major Japanese chemicals investment in the UK and takes full advantage of BP's recent investments at the site.
