LONDON (CNI)--Basell said Thursday its European polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE) plants are running normally following cutbacks in the fourth quarter last year.
A spokesman for the European polyolefins producer said production of PP and PE was cut by 145 000 tonne and 102 000 tonne respectively because of low demand.
Basell began 2002 with low stocks of PP and PE due to the cutbacks, he said, and no cuts are planned for January. However, the company expects to lose up to 100 000 tonne of PP this year while its Brindisi plant in Italy is closed for a multizone circulating reactor (MZCR) technology retrofit.
Basell reduced PP production by 30 000 tonne in October, 60 000 tonne in November and 55 000 tonne in December. The spokesman noted, however, that the Wesseling, Germany PP plant remains closed after being shut for about a year because of low demand. There was no monthly breakdown of PE reductions.
