LONDON (CNI)--Italian engineering and construction company Tecnimont said Thursday it has won a Euro140m ($125m) contract to build a high-density polyethylene (hdPE) plant at Wesseling, Germany for European polyolefins producer Basell.

The 320 000 tonne/year capacity unit, which will use Basell's Hostalen technology, is scheduled for start-up early in 2004.

Tecnimont, which is part of the Montedison group, said its contract covers the supply of detailed engineering, materials and equipment, as well as construction and construction management. It is believed to have beaten off competition from Krupp Uhde, ABB Lummus Global, Siemens Axiva and Kellogg Brown & Root for the contract.

In confirming plans for the new plant last year, Basell said it will produce Hostalen hdPE pipe grades using the bimodal advanced cascade process, the latest generation of its Hostalen slurry technology.

Basell, which is a joint venture between Germany's BASF and Anglo-Dutch group Shell, said the plant will enable it to play an expanded role in the western Europe pipe market, which is expected to grow at over 5% per year through 2009.

Basell has just expanded its No 6 ethylene cracker at Wesseling by 40 000 tonne/year to 750 000 tonne/year.
