LONDON (CNI)--BASF said Thursday it is expanding production of the specialty polyamide Ultramid C in Ludwigshafen, Germany by 15 000 tonne/year.
The expansion is expected to be completed in the third quarter of this year and will take BASF's total European production capacity for Ultramid polyamides and specialty polyamides up to 340 000 tonne/year. Some 280 000 tonne/year will be produced at Ludwigshafen, and the remainder is located in Antwerp, said a BASF spokeswoman.
She declined to disclose the Ultramid C capacity at Ludwigshafen - BASF's sole production site for the product.
Germany-based BASF said the expansion is part of its strategy to strengthen the specialty business within its plastics segment. Annual growth for Ultramid C is estimated at about 8-12%, it added.
The Ultramid range includes the higher volume products Ultramid A (PA 66) and Ultramid B (PA 6). Ultramid C is a copolyamide based on PA 6 and PA 66.
