LONDON (CNI)--European polyolefins producer Basell said Tuesday that 45 jobs will be lost as a result of the permanent closure of its styrene plant in Wesseling, Germany.

A spokesman for Basell, a 50:50 joint venture between BASF and Shell, told CNI that most of the 45 people will moved to other jobs at Wesseling. Basell has some 2000 employees at the site, he said.

BASF announced the closure of the 410 000 tonne/year plant earlier today. The German group said the main reason for closure of the plant, which covered part of its styrene requirements in Europe, was a global drop in demand for styrene and styrenic polymers.
