Huntsman Tioxide has decided to postpone the expansion of its titanium dioxide plant in Huelva, Spain.

Huntsman had initially planned to add 17 000 tonne/ year of material, due to become available in the fourth quarter of this year. The company had recently awarded a contract to Lurgi Life Science to expand the waste acid unit at the site (ECN 21 January 2002).

The whole project required an investment of $40m, but Huntsman now says the expansion will be completed 'when the market recovery is fully established'.

Rob Louw, senior vice president commercial, said: 'Our company-wide production development programme is already yielding pleasing benefits, and capacity improvement projects at other sites will soon be completed.'

Louw added: 'Our Malaysia plant now produces an extra 6000 tonne/year and our Icon 2 project in Greatham, UK, will add another 20 000 tonne/year this year. We already have a healthy stock position and are well covered to serve the recovering market demands.'

The extra capacity from the Icon 2 plant in Greatham is due to become available in the second quarter of this year.
