HOUSTON (CNI)--DuPont plans to expand its engineering polymers business through acquisitions with a particular focus on adding polycarbonate (PC) to its portfolio, the company told CNI Thursday.
DuPont declined to say how much it is willing to invest in PC acquisitions or speculate on targets. But the company told CNI it wants to expand into the amorphous products arena while continuing to enhance growth in the crystalline products segment where it already holds strong market positions in several key high performance and engineering plastics.
And the company told CNI Thursday it believes this may be an opportune time for finding assets available at attractive prices due to the economic turmoil that has ravaged the marketplace the last two years.
Craig Naylor, general manager for DuPont's engineering polymers business, recently told analysts the company have flashed a "green light to look for acquisitions" and Naylor vowed he would be "proactive" in that regard.
He said DuPont would prefer to acquire a producer with a global position in PC and would acquire a smaller business only if it appears possible to cultivate that opportunity quickly into a global player.
In his presentation, Naylor listed six other amorphous plastics with opportunities for growth: polysulfone (PSU), polyetherimide (PEI), polyarylate (PAR), polyethersulfone (PES), modified polyphenylene oxide (MPPO) and polymethyl methacrylate acrylic (PMMA).
He said DuPont has re-deployed more than 100 professionals in the last two years from maintenance duties to growth positions in engineering polymers.
Besides acquisitions and re-deployment, Naylor told the analysts DuPont also would be working to maintain its base revenues with less resources in engineering polymers and leveraging the company's access into new growth segments for existing products.
In the crystalline segment of the business, Naylor said DuPont holds top positions in the production of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), thermoplastic polyester elastomer (TPE), polybutylene terephthalate (PBT), polyamide or nylon (PA), polyoxymethylene acetal (POM), liquid crystal polymer (LCP), high temperature nylon (HTN) and polyimide (PI).
