LONDON (CNI)--German chemicals giant BASF announced on Friday it has signed an exclusive computer equipment supply deal with Dell Computer to cut its information technology (IT) costs.

The multi-million dollar deal will lower personal computer (PC) hardware and service costs through standardisation on a single PC platform, said BASF.

A BASF spokesman said this is BASF's first computer supply deal with a single supplier, as his company had previously used different companies for its computer needs.

Financial details of the contract were not disclosed and no estimation of the exact IT cost savings were volunteered by BASF.

Dell will deliver more than 60 000 notebooks, workstations and desktop PCs to BASF over a three-year period. Applying its custom factory integration service, Dell will supply all computer systems "ready to run" with BASF-specific hardware and software, providing BASF employees with global access to their familiar applications.
