HOUSTON (CNI)--Robert Slaughter on Monday was named president of the National Petrochemical & Refiners Association (NPRA), succeeding Urvan Sternfels who retires 1 April.
Said NPRA Chairman Jerry Thompson, senior vice president of Citgo: "Bob's 25 years of advocacy experience, both in representing the energy industry and in government service, will help NPRA explain to policymakers the important role our industries play in the US economy and in maintaining national security."
Slaughter currently serves as NPRA's general counsel and director of public policy. For the past three years, he has been the Association's chief legislative and media spokesman. Slaughter previously served as director of federal relations for Amoco, representing that company as its senior Washington lobbyist.
Prior to that, Slaughter was a top aide to former Senator, Congressman and Ambassador Bob Krueger.
Last year Slaughter was named one of Washington's dozen most influential trade association lobbyists by Influence magazine.
Sternfels will retire after 31 years with NPRA - 21 as president - following NPRA's annual meeting in San Antonio, Texas.
