SAN ANTONIO, Texas (CNI)--For the first time, the International Petrochemical Conference (IPC) will devote a special session to the subject of supply chain logistics featuring experts as diverse as Eastman Chemical’s Earnest Deavenport and Tom Kornegay from the Port of Houston.
Scheduled as the final event of this year’s 27th annual meeting here on Tuesday, the industry trade group will take a closer look at ways to lower costs on that side of the business.
With the first session focused on North America, IPC hopes to turn this feature into an annual addition to the conference, which is sponsored by the National Petrochemical & Refiners Association (NPRA). This year’s conference began today (Sunday) and runs through Tuesday.
"We hope this new segment will become a permanent feature of IPC," said NPRA’s petrochemicals director Bruce Petersen.
He said: "We see it as a forum for supply chain providers and petrochemical producers to get together and talk with each other."
Logistics and transport also have become hot issues during the last two years following a variety of events ranging from troubles with rail transport and the need for added security after the 11 September terrorist attacks on the US.
Besides Deavenport and Kornegay, the logistics panel was scheduled to include presentations from Clifford Harrison, president of National Tank Truck Carriers; Berdon Lawrence, chairman of the Kirby tank barge corporation; Steve Miles, president of Intercontinental Terminals; Edward Sims, general manager for chemicals at Union Pacific (UP) railroad; Bjorn Sjaastad, president and chief executive at Odfjell; and Brad Ross, the executive in charge of Global Order to Delivery Operations.
Bill Waycaster, president of Houston-based Texas Petrochemicals, will preside at the panel discussion, which begins Tuesday afternoon.
