HOUSTON (CNI)--US biotechnology company Genzyme Corporation will invest more than $100m (Euro115m) to expand its recently acquired facility in Geel, Belgium and transform it into a world-class protein production operation by 2004, the company told CNI Tuesday.

Genzyme acquired the complex last year from the Dutch biotechnology and pharmaceutical company Pharming, buying all of Pharming's Belgian assets.

A subsidiary of Cincinnati, Ohio-based Jacobs Engineering Group will provide full service design, engineering, procurement and construction management services at the Geel location. Groundbreaking on the project is set for the third quarter.

Genzyme is headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
