Specialty materials producer Amcol International Corp. posted first quarter earnings of $532,000, or 2 cents per share, on 11 percent lower sales of $57.3 million. Minerals segment sales fell 13 percent to $33.7 million while operating profits sank 40 percent to $2.2 million. The business unit produces bentonite clay for industrial applications such as oil drilling lubricants, cat litter and personal care applications. Environmental segment sales declined 8 percent to $18.5 million while operating earnings fell 65 percent to $939,000. The unit refines bentonite clay into products for waterproofing, lining, and also provides wastewater treatment and offshore drilling chemicals and services.
