Agreement. Acros Organics has signed an agreement to market research quantities of ChiroTech's range of chiral organic advanced intermediates, unnatural amino acids and scaffolds worldwide. The range of chiral chemicals will be targeted specifically at the pharmaceutical R&D community and was launched in the new Acros Organics catalogue.

Live. Rutherford Chemicals, the new Cambrex subsidiary, became effective on 1 January 2002. Rutherford includes operating units that primarily produce speciality and fine chemicals, animal health and agriculture products. It will manage CasChem, Bayonne, New Jersey; Cosan Chemical, Carlstadt, New Jersey; Heico Chemicals, Delaware Water Gap, Pennsylvania; Nepera, Harriman, New York; and Zeeland Chemicals, Zeeland, Michigan; all in the US and Seal Sands, Teesside in the UK.

No hope. BASF's chairman Jrgen Strube has held out no immediate hope of a sustained improvement in the chemicals economy.

In an interview with the German newspaper FAZ, Strube suggested that the economic cycle for chemicals may be neither 'V' nor 'U' but 'W' shaped. He said it is currently nearing the mid-peak of the W. Inventories were run down at the end of last year and therefore customers will be restocking, but at a subdued level, he explained.

Appointment. The UK Chemical Industries Association (CIA) has named Judith Hackitt as its new director general. Hackitt will take up the role on 1 April following the retirement of Elliot Finer.
