SINGAPORE (CNI)--BP Amoco Malaysia has shut its 600 000 tonne/year purified terephthalic acid (PTA) plant in Gebeng, Kuantan, due to a minor mechanical problem, a company source told CNI on Friday. The plant was closed on 14 May.

The source said the company had decided to close the plant because it was not running as smoothly as was hoped after it was restarted on 10 May following a four-day maintenance shutdown. The turnaround started on 3 May.

Repair work is now under way and BP expects the plant to restart on 19 May.

The source said the company would be able to meet its contract commitments for May by drawing on its inventory. However, the company may have to delay the delivery schedule for June cargoes for some customers, he added.
