HOUSTON (CNI)--A chemicals industry security group announced strategic plans Monday to shield on-line data and process control systems from hostile penetration.
Meeting in Washington, DC, the chemicals sector Cyber-Security Information Sharing Forum (CISF) adopted an industry cyber-security strategy that "focuses on cyber-security risk management and reduction to provide secure information and process control systems that will enable collaborative business operations."
In a statement today, the CISF said the strategy was developed in response to President George W Bush's call for the public and private sectors to develop security strategies in the wake of the September 2001 terrorist attacks.
"With the strategy initiative," said the CISF statement, "the industry has come together to define an action plan to develop cyber-security standards, products and practices necessary to shield propriety information and facilitate safe operations"
CISF is made up of senior chemical company officials and industry trade associations. The group is headed by David Kepler, vice president and chief information officer at Dow Chemical.
The strategy program, said CISF, recommends, among other measures, establishment of a company cyber-security public affairs operation and an information-sharing network throughout the industry to "distribute advance warnings of cyber-security threats, vulnerabilities and incidents."
A spokeswoman for CISF was not available to answer questions about CISF or the group's strategy plans. Nor did the announcement provide details, such as a Web site address, which could guide chemical firms to further information on CISF and the cyber-security strategy.
